Indica

Originating for the hash producers of the world like Afghanistan, India and Morocco, indica plants are short, dense, and often grow a darker green with a strong sweet or sour smell. Indica strains are sedatives/ relaxants and are effective for treating the symptoms of medical conditions such as anxiety, seizures, migraines, chronic pain, insomnia, muscle spasms, and tremors. Indicas have a higher level of cannabinoids than sativas resulting in a sedated body-type stone. Because indica strains may cause feelings of sleepiness and heaviness, many patients prefer to medicate with this type of cannabis at night.

Sativa

Sativa plants tend to be taller and more narrow with thinner leaves. These buds tend to have a grassy or fruity smell. Sativa strains are more of a stimulant, and are effective in appetite stimulation, relieving depression, migraines, chronics pain and nausea. Sativas typically have a higher level of THC than indicas, which results in a psychoactive and energetic mind-high. Because saliva strains may cause feelings of alertness and optimism, many patents prefer to medicate with this type of cannabis during the day.

Hybrid

Hybrids and cross-breeds of indica and sativa of indica and sativa strains produce varieties that carry some characteristics of each parent. For example, adding sativa to indica strains adds mental clarity and decreases sedation effects. And adding indica to saliva strains can decrease or even eliminate the sativa tendency to stimulate anxiety. Many patients can benefit from the use of hybrid strains due to vast variety of different cannabinoid profile and effects.

Ways To Administer Cannabis

Smoking

Tinctures

Concentrates

With the use of pipes, water pipes or rolling papers, cannabis smoke is inhaled then quickly exhaled.

Pros: Smoking cannabis allows instant relief, flexibility and control over dosage.

Cons: Smoking Cannabis may not be discreet. Inhaling any type of smoke can cause damage to the lungs.

Cannabis tinctures used to be the primary form of medicinal cannabis. Cannabis is soaked in agrain alcohol or glycerin solution where cannabinoids and terpenes are extracts. Using a half or full dropper, the solution is then delivered under the tongue. The sublingual method absorbs cannabinoids quickly and discreetly.

Pros: Fast acting, discreet, does not require inhalation of smoke, no smell.

Cons: Results are not delivered as fast as smoking, many patients wish to avoid alcohol based solutions.

Concentrates are the extracted THC and CBD cannabinoids without the additional plant matter. Concentrates have a much higher THC content than dried flower and is not recommended for new users. Concentrates are heated up to 150-205ºC and inhaled using a vaporizer or dab rig.

Pros: Efficient means of delivering relief for pain and serious chronic medical conditions, cause less damage to the lungs and does not require inhalation of and plant matter, very potent and has a mild odour.

Cons: Required equipment can be costly, high THC content can be too much for new users and although overdosing on marijuana is never fatal, it can be very uncomfortable.

Vaping

Topicals

Edibles

With the use of a vaporizer, cannabis is heated up to around 175-200ºC in a chamber, then inhaled by the patient. Vaporizing is a healthy alternative to smoking, as it heats marijuana to the correct temperature ensuring that the cannabinoids and terpenes are vaporized efficiently, without the combustion or and inhalation of smoke. This provides optimal medicinal effects.

Pros: Vaporizing does not involve inhalation of smoke, dosages can be easily controlled, and allows you to use less product to achieve the same medical benefits, and can be discreet with minimal smoke and a mild dissipating odour.

Cons: Vaporizers must be charged or have a power source, are not always portable and can be expensive. It is important to use a high quality vape to ensure marijuana is heated up to the right temperature to vaporize THC and CBD without causing combustion.

Topicals are cannabis infused lotions, balms and oils. Topicals are great for patients wanting the therapeutic benefits of marijuana without the cerebral "high" as topicals are non-psychoactive. These lotions and balms are absorbed through the skin and provide relief of pain from nerves, arthritis, inflammation, and general soreness, and burn treatment among other conditions. The cannabinoids found in marijuana have an analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect on the body when coming into contact with human CB2 receptors, but do not enter the bloodstream.

Pros: Topicals provide relief for patients suffering from physical symptoms without the associated high.

Cons: Topicals do not work for everyone, and do not treat cancer, depression, anxiety, PTSD, glaucoma, etc...

Edibles have come a long way since the marijuana brownie. Edibles now come in the form of cookies, candies, drinks, fruits, teas, oils, and more. Edibles are a great choice for patients when consumed responsibly due to its potency and long lasting effects. Unfortunately many people have poor experiences with edibles since tasty treats make it easy to consume large  amounts of cannabis.

Pros: Edibles are discreet, powerful and  long lasting, and do not involve the inhalation of smoke.

Cons: Edibles typically take 30-45 minutes to kick in and can last 4-8 hours, which may not be ideal for some patients. Furthermore, it is easy to consume a large amount of edibles and dosing may be more difficult to control. Lots of edibles come in the form of junk food which can cause negative health effects and be more appealing to children. It is important to keep edibles in a safe and secure location, away from children and pets.
